The Longest Deer Hunting Season
I live in Wisconsin where we have an overabundance of deer. In Wisconsin we have three gun hunting seasons, early antlerless, regular season and late antlerless. During the regular season in November this year we had unusually warm temperatures which topped of in the 60s and deer don’t move very well around here in that weather. After 9 days of the worst pushing and shoving through the thickest cover and only turning out one small nubbin buck our regular season had came to an end. Then came late season antlerless, We don’t normally hunt this season but wanted to put a little more venison in the freezer.
It was a cool crisp December morning with a light frost but sunny and perfect for hunting. We got off to a late start after having to drop my brother off at school. We drove the 30 minutes to the hunting spot which is a public hunting hunting grounds that consists of tall grass, wetland bottoms, and lower hardwoods. During the drive to the spot we happened to miss a right hand turn and ended up an a little turn around off the side of the road. My dad decided that we couldn’t get a deer by driving around so we stopped and got out and got ready. After bout 10 minutes of putting our gear on we where ready for the hunt. We walked a little trail down to a grass flat that turned into a wooded swamp.
After entering the grass we split up about 25 yards apart and started walking through the grass towards the woodlot. As we walked there was a little willow thicket to my dads right. He approached the thicket and to my amazement he pulled his gun up and out came a beautiful doe. I watched him follow her and then the shot, after hearing the crack I watched her fall into the swamp. She had been hit in the head so it was a good clean kill. After tagging her we realized we had only been out there for 10 minutes and may have been the easiest hunt but was the hardest, longest season we have had.
This story may sound like any other story to anyone else but this hunting season has brought me and my dad closer together. After all this we registered the deer and took her right to the meat market and she weighed in a nice 135lbs. This will be the greatest season I’ve had and to top it all off I never got one shot at a deer.
